The Loch Nell

A (Rather Lengthy) Introduction.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always liked to create art. I remember when I was younger I would glue sheets of A4 papers along the middle and stack them on top of each other so the glued parts formed a spine; before drawing astronauts and planets (I used to be really into astronomy) while referring to my favourite encyclopaedia.

I enjoyed art classes at school, but I wasn’t what you’d call a natural-born artist – the kind who are able to draw from real life, shading where the light failed to reach etc., sketching out the most beautiful faces solely through instinct or the memory of a stranger’s face. Somehow, over the years, because of that I’ve stopped short of calling myself an artist. But as time went, I learnt that the term artist was not limited to my previous definition. One way or another we are all artists in our own right.

I was on internship for 6 months at a publishing company when I really got my hands dirty (literally) and figuratively, into Photoshop. Prior to that I’d taken a class at my Polytechnic that taught us the basics – I’ll always remember that class because I got a C+ from it, my friends and I we often joke about that. Creating posters, flyers, on internship I meddled with the program and realized the best things learnt are the ones you teach yourself (with some help from tutorials).

Going back to school for our last 6 months, I tried drawing graphics using Photoshop for the school magazine and found it really exciting. I realized I wanted to draw all my life, but just never found the right medium. But before I could pursue it further, school was out, graduation would be in in a couple of months. Moreover, our course was very production-based and print media formed a lesser part of the curriculum.

Entering University, I started drawing again on the computer because I was really bored in hall, but it was only in the next semester when I spotted an ad in the Chronicle looking for graphic artists, did I start a new journey. That semester I drew 3 graphics and before Yr 2, had a really great opportunity to draw for the paper as the Graphics Editor. Somehow, after that semester concluded I did not thoroughly enjoy the process (due to various reasons), and decided not to continue. Somehow, I wanted more time to design for myself. I took a design course that same semester and enjoyed it, despite it being so draining and demanding at times. I became very inspired later.

Now, I’m into designing zine and notebook covers, occasionally drawing lower-res graphics for my badges (I sell them on Etsy), and visiting websites like DoodlersAnonymous daily. My favourite kind of art are simple patterned vector graphics, doodly free-style images of skyscrapers and small-town-feel girl on bicycle, urban settings all using a thin black pen (0.4), stencil art, screenprint, letterpress, typography, and line art. I believe as I explore further I’ll discover more. In the meantime, I’m enjoying creating simple art and this website serves as a repository of sorts to keep track of all that I’ve done in recent years (I’m afraid my space drawing book may be lost forever).

Welcome, and I hope you enjoy your stay.

P.S. I update whenever I’ve completed (or am in the midst of completing) a project to the sidebar on the right, but will not add new posts above this one you’re reading. So do check back if you’d like to follow my progress.
